I'm considering illustrating a fantasy story, that a colleague of mine is writing, and we're kind of wondering what sort of major design decisions to make.
He's read a lot of comics, so he suggested we make this into a comic... which is an idea, but I can't figure out how to simplify my style enough to keep it mature and expressive but still quick enough to draw to make it a viable comic. The other concern I personally have with the idea, is that the text he's written so far is in first person narrative, and it's really fun that way. the narration part would most likely be lost in comic format, where image replaces narration.
My idea for it is to illustrate it, to illustrate the important scenes, the important characters, and allow the illustrations to intertwine with text (something along the lines of how the engravings in Alice in Wonderland work to support the text...). Now, what's cool about that, to me, is that it can keep the storytelling style as it is, and reduce the workload on my shoulders. This'd end up in a much easier to manage number of illustrations, so I could probably draw them in a more realistic style, closer to what I've been trying to draw lately
Either way, we'd like to upload updates regularly once we get started, so for a comic, it would be about a page a week, since I can't do more, and that's painfully slow and kinda too fragmented, and with the illustration idea, we could update a full chapter or half a chapter at a time... which seems to make more sense to me, but then again, it's my idea, haha.
But I'm looking for some input from you guys?
Would you rather read a story as a comic, or as an illustrated story, bearing in mind that the story is quite mature and serious? what are your thoughts of the maturity and level of detail in the illustrative artwork that should accompany a serious story?
