Portrait Commission

Wed Jul 22, 2009, 2:57 PM
I'm opening up some portrait commissions, if anyone is interested, in this style: [link]

They'd be priced at 12 to 15 USD depending on the detail level. And I can only accept payment via Paypal for now.

Lemme know if you're interested or if you have any questions.

What is your favorite fairy-tale?

:) I'm really curious about this, what's everyone's favorite fairy tale?

Critiques?

Tue Apr 7, 2009, 1:43 AM
What is this new critique mechanic and how do I go about writing one? :D

Please teach me :D

I found a "critique" in my inbox, something a deviant I watch had written on another piece... seems really cool, but I can't figure out how to use it myself yet :P

I really dig the new artist pages, they're easier on the eye for some reason. I didn't expect devart to make this style available to everyone, but I'm glad of it :) I also dig all the customizable ones that you subscriptiony people have been making, really cool stuff :)
As for me, the only real change I'd like to do which I can't do is to move the art to the right. For some reason, my brain feels calmer when it sees it on the right. Funny that :P

Your opinions please

I'm considering illustrating a fantasy story, that a colleague of mine is writing, and we're kind of wondering what sort of major design decisions to make.

He's read a lot of comics, so he suggested we make this into a comic... which is an idea, but I can't figure out how to simplify my style enough to keep it mature and expressive but still quick enough to draw to make it a viable comic. The other concern I personally have with the idea, is that the text he's written so far is in first person narrative, and it's really fun that way. the narration part would most likely be lost in comic format, where image replaces narration.

My idea for it is to illustrate it, to illustrate the important scenes, the important characters, and allow the illustrations to intertwine with text (something along the lines of how the engravings in Alice in Wonderland work to support the text...). Now, what's cool about that, to me, is that it can keep the storytelling style as it is, and reduce the workload on my shoulders. This'd end up in a much easier to manage number of illustrations, so I could probably draw them in a more realistic style, closer to what I've been trying to draw lately :)

Either way, we'd like to upload updates regularly once we get started, so for a comic, it would be about a page a week, since I can't do more, and that's painfully slow and kinda too fragmented, and with the illustration idea, we could update a full chapter or half a chapter at a time... which seems to make more sense to me, but then again, it's my idea, haha.

But I'm looking for some input from you guys?

Would you rather read a story as a comic, or as an illustrated story, bearing in mind that the story is quite mature and serious? what are your thoughts of the maturity and level of detail in the illustrative artwork that should accompany a serious story?
