February Speedpaint 19th Feb. by madam-marla February Speedpaint 19th Feb. by madam-marla
Reference: [link]
Part of: [link]
Time spent: 2 hours

This was hard. In light of the critique I'm now going to take the full 2 hours on each of the remaining pictures, and trying to stick to my reference a bit more. :)

Btw I just love the atmosphere of the photo reference. All that's missing is little red riding hood strolling down through the creepy forest or snow white seeing monsters in the branches :P

Crit welcomed :)

I like it. Pretty dry and creepy. Good atmosphere.

Very nice sense of depth.

Wow great job Marla! This really has a feeling of like... I dunno, pixar-ish concept art. I guess its how you rendered the trees. Its a neat effect. Could spend forever on the damn branches huh! How you handled the distance and fog fading on the ground too is very interesting, I like how you handled it fading into the background. The only thing I'm not really too keen on in this one is the quickly splattered leaves brush on the ground. In the thumb-nail it looks good, but I dunno... you did such a fabulous job on the branches it seemed out of place for me. Might have been a time issue though which I can understand. I nearly forgot about the ground!

yeah, I spent forever detailing the branches, and kinda ran out of time for the ground, it was the last thing I worked on. You're right that the leaves could have been rendered better even in the amount of time I had though. Maybe some better choices to create that texture would have helped :) *goes over to see yours ^^*

I agree with the comment above - a light touch of fog would really add to it; but only if it was very subtle. Even a little bit of shading around the trees too. Overally, it is a very creepy place; like something out of Halloween. Nice.

Yes i shall be taking the full 2 hours too haha. I think you got the depth right and the colours very nicely. One thing that strikes me though is the trees look like you turned the opacity down on the layer rather than painting them then adding a bit of fog over the top of them. If you make them more solid then add a layer on top of fog I think that would look better :).
